Family Meeting – Effective Communication

people, leisure, friendship and communication concept

Communication Styles

For productive family meetings, a critical skill family members must learn is effective communication. We all have our habitual and conditioned manner for how we speak to others and how we receive information when others speak to us – in other words, our personality temperament or communication style. Effective communication requires us to understand both sides so that we are not hypersensitive or making incorrect assumptions and to be mindful of oneself, especially in a group dynamic. There are existing tools available that teach us about our (and others’) communication styles, such as Real Colors, DISC Model, and MBTI. With the help of a facilitator applying one of these tools, families can learn how to effectively communicate with one another.
