Shared Aircraft Ownership: A Brief History

Two pilots flying the airplane with full landing configuration to the airport runway straight.

There is an ancient Norwegian proverb that says, a shared joy doubles the joy. The concept of sharing things is taught universally from a very young age in all cultures around the world. Shared usage of amenities is nothing new. In modern times, the most common and widespread example is that of the timeshare concept – made popular in the 1980-1990s with condominiums in Mexico, frequented by Americans and Canadians wishing to escape the cold in the winter. Buy a “fraction” of a condo, use it two weeks a year and “share” it with any numbers of other strangers who do the same- and sharing the fixed costs of maintaining it. A shared joy, indeed!

Somewhere along the way, some young enterprising minds thought, could the same concept be applied to aviation? After all, these highly expensive machines often-times may only be needed a few times a year – why not “share the joy” with 4, 8 or 16 of nameless, faceless friends? Thus, fractional aircraft ownership was born.
